Geoffrey Clifton-Brown calls on British SMEs to export around the world

15th March 2017

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown calls on British SMEs to take the opportunity of Brexit to export around the world.

Q12. With 80% of small and medium-sized enterprises reluctant to export, does my right hon. Friend agree that the prospect of Brexit gives those firms—particularly those from Scotland—a golden opportunity to use the great British entrepreneurial spirit to go out into the world and succeed? [909268]

My hon. Friend is absolutely right. Small businesses and entrepreneurs are essential to an economy that is working for everyone. The opportunity that comes from Brexit is to see those firms go out and export across the world, and to do those trade deals that will be of benefit to them, to their communities and to our economy. We want to encourage more businesses to go out there and export. That is exactly what my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for International Trade is doing. This is an important part of building a stronger, fairer Britain for the future.

Now that the Christmas festivities are over, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a happy and successful new year.

For me, that started in a big way – by becoming a grandfather for the first time and for being simultaneously recognised in the New Year’s Honours list and being awarded a knighthood. I am absolutely delighted to receive this honour in recognition of the very many people I have helped over the years.

How to raise an issue

Call 020 7219 5043 or email cliftonbrowng@parliament.uk if you wish to raise an important matter with me - but please check "What can an MP do for me?" in the section before making contact.

In some cases a face-to-face appointment/pre-arranged telephone call may be necessary in order to discuss and pursue matters personally.

However, I ask that all cases must first be raised with me in writing by letter or email.

Once initial enquiries have been made on your behalf then I will consider the best and most appropriate way forward in order to help you.

WHAT CAN AN MP DO FOR ME?

Many people think that their MP exists to solve all their problems for them: this is not the case.

MPs are there to legislate and help only with those matters for which Parliament or central government is responsible.

For many matters, the appropriate first step would be to contact your local Cotswold District or Gloucestershire County Councillor.
